According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), September is National Recovery Month. The federal government in unison with non-profits, individuals, families, counselors, social workers and other helping professionals will use this month to promote the awareness of addictions and the often rocky road to recovery. SAMSHA says that 2.6 million Americans age 12 or over received treatment for an alcohol or drug problem in 2010. Marygrove College’s Department of Social Work and the Division of Continuing Education and Career Enhancement have teamed up to offer a series of seminars that will focus on addiction and recovery in support of this important campaign.
The first of Marygrove’s Applied Professional Education Seminars for Addiction Specialists (and others in the helping professions) will be offered during National Recovery Month. On Friday, September 28, 2012, from 9 AM to 12:30 PM, Michael Johnson, LMSW, a national expert, consultant and trainer in recovery will speak on Relapse Dynamics and the Offender. Like the rest of the seminars in this series, this dynamic, highly interactive forum will address the specific needs of those working with addiction and recovery and will earn participants 3 CEU hours toward the Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) and the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative (MSWCEC) continuing education requirements. The seminar will take place on the beautiful Marygrove College main campus in the historic Madame Cadillac building.
The rest of the Applied Professional Education Seminars for Addiction Specialists include:
- Friday, October 26, 9 AM to 12:30 PM – The Recovery Community and Peer Support Services with David Sampson, LMSW, the CEO of Mariners Inn.
- Friday, November 30, 9 AM to 12:30 PM – Alternative Treatment Modalities for Substance Abusing, Sexual Assault and Trauma Survivors featuring two Assistant Professors at Marygrove College; Kalimah Johnson, LMSW, ACSW and Debbie Hanselman, LMSW, CAADC.
This is a great opportunity to network with other addiction specialists, other helping professionals, and Marygrove faculty and students while earning your CE hours and enhancing your career.
All of the seminars are just $49 each ($10 for students) and you can save even more by registering for all three before September 28 at $125. For more information or to register, call 313-927-1219 or visit the Continuing Education Office in the Madame Cadillac building, room 127.
The Applied Professional Education Seminars replaces the Friday Lunch and Learn Workshops for behavioral health care providers. Future seminars will focus on other timely and relevent topics for various behavioral health care providers.
